I began hiking at the perfect time without realizing it. At the time, I had a lot of self-esteem issues and was just… lost. I didn’t know what to do with myself and was struggling with having my life not be where I wanted it to be. Looking back now, I’m like GIRL, you’re fine!!
One day, I had a random inspiration to hike. I had never hiked before but loved the outdoors and being active, so I thought, why not! I remember this day so vividly. I had no idea what I wanted to do or what I needed. The closest mountain to me was Mt. Monadnock, so I grabbed a water and running sneakers and drove out there! I didn’t have a thought to look at the weather, so I didn’t realize it was going to RAIN!! But I made the drive, so I was going to complete the hike. Luckily, the rain drove off most people, so the trail wasn’t crowded. I quickly realized one water and no snacks was a bad idea, but I pushed through. I let my mind be free of all my negative daily thoughts and enjoyed nature. I felt amazing! It was similar to a runner’s high. As soon as I reached the top, the clouds dispersed showing beautiful 360° views. Even though Mt. Monadnock is not tall, I felt small. My problems felt tiny up on the summit. It was a HUGE wake-up call. I swear nature can cure anything. I knew I needed to keep hiking.
Once I found the 48 4,000 Footer List, I was the happiest girl. The list has taken me on a crazy journey, led me to incredible places and pushed me past my limits - physically, mentally and emotionally. I have also met the most amazing people on these hikes who have incredible stories.
I cannot wait to continue creating my journey through the mountains.
