Eastman Mountain NH Hike Overview
Eastman Mountain (2,938’) is one of the lesser hiked mountains on the 52 With a View List, despite being next to the iconic Baldface Mountains. Although it is not hiked as much as other mountains on the list, it does not lack beautiful views! The summit offers views looking towards South Baldface, the White Mountains, and into Maine. You can even see Mount Washington when it is out of the clouds!
Trail Details
Trail: Emerald Pool Trail > Slippery Brook Trail > Eastman Mountain Trail
Length: 8.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,600 feet
My Trail Time: 5 hours hiking; 5.5 hours total
Hike Overview
Eastman Mountain is in the Evans Notch side of the White Mountains, an often overlooked area. Although a few trails lead to the summit, the most popular way to reach it is via the Slippery Brook Trail.
Parking for Slippery Brook Trail is the same as the Baldface Loop. In the summer, this lot is often filled by early morning, so I recommend arriving early to secure a spot. I hiked the Baldfaces on a weekday, and the parking lot was full by 9 AM.
The hike to Eastman Mountain is one of the longest on the 52 With a View List, but the trail is pretty gradual. The first half of the trail crosses multiple streams, but only one can be tough to cross after heavy rainfall. The second half of the trail is steeper, but only the last section near the summit has some large rocks to climb.

**Always remember to leave no trace. It is crucial to pack out what you pack in and throw away your trash properly.
Eastman Mountain was one of the last mountains I had to hike on the 52 With a View List, and I was so excited to tackle it on a beautiful Sunday! It was raining for what felt like weeks, and it was finally the first weekend with no rain, so I took advantage of it!
We arrived at the trailhead around 9 AM, and the parking lot only had a few cars. Most hikers were hiking the Baldfaces, so we knew we would have a quiet hike to Eastman.
The trailhead parking is across the street from the start of the trail, so when we walked out of it, we turned right to walk down the road a bit before crossing the street to get onto the trail. It has plenty of signage, so it was easy to find!
The first mile of the hike is along the Emerald Pool Trail, which is pretty flat. This section of the trail is usually packed in the summer when everyone heads to Emerald Pool, but we did not see any other hiker.
After a mile, we turned left to follow the signs for Slippery Brook Trail. This area had a lot of trails, so it was crucial to follow the signs and have a trail map! A few areas made us pause and check the map to make sure we were still on the right trail.
Over the next mile on Slippery Brook Trail, we crossed several brooks. I wish I had counted, but it was a lot. Most were easy to cross even after the heavy rainfall over the last few weeks, and only one required us to take a few minutes to find the right rock-hopping path across.
The trail continued to ascend gradually until about the last 1.5 miles, when it became steeper. Honestly, it was not overly steep, but after a few miles of hiking, we definitely felt it!
Once we were a little less than a mile from Eastman Mountain, we came to another trail junction. We took a sharp left to continue on the Eastman Mountain Trail and make the final push to the summit.
This section of the hike was STUNNING, with green and white moss everywhere. I love a mossy trail, so I quickly fell in love with Eastman Mountain Trail. And the first part of the trail was pretty flat as it traveled through the forest.
It was not until just before the summit of Eastman Mountain that the trail started to climb steeply again. This section of the trail had a few rocks to climb, but it was not overly difficult. And before we knew it, we were at the summit!
The summit of Eastman Mountain is not above the treeline, but the views were still gorgeous. We had a view looking towards South Baldface, Maine, and the White Mountains. We could even see Mount Washington peaking over the nearby ridgeline. The best views, in my opinion, were looking southwest into the White Mountains.
We sat on the summit, enjoying a break and the views for half an hour. It felt so nice to finally be at the point in the year where it was not too cold to relax on the summit. But the wind started to pick up, making it pretty chilly, so we started our descent quickly after.
We only passed two other groups of hikers at the summit who were continuing to the Baldfaces, so we had the entire trail on our descent to ourselves. It was incredibly peaceful!
Because the terrain along the trail was not anything crazy (no large boulders), we flew down the trail. And by the time we reached the stream crossings, the water had already gone down a bit, making the one tricky crossing easier than the morning.
On our descent, we decided to take the side trail to Emerald Pool. The water was extremely high, so we were not able to go down to it, but it was beautiful nonetheless!
And before we knew it, we were back at the trailhead! Surprisingly, the parking lot was still pretty empty except for the Mayflies that decided to descend upon us as soon as we arrived. I think the wind kept most of them away from us when we were hiking, but they were brutal in the parking lot.
Overall, I loved the hike to Eastman Mountain! The trail was lush and beautiful, and the views at the summit were gorgeous. I will definitely hike Eastman Mountain again!
