What is the Vereda do Larano to Boca do Risco Hike?

The Vereda do Larano hike is a stunning coastal hike near Port da Cruz. Because it is not a PR hike, many people overlook it, but it honestly should be on every bucket list. The entire trail is beautiful!

Technically, you can start this hike in a few places, but I recommend starting on the Porto da Cruz side and hiking to Boca do Risco. We hiked this route and loved it!

Most of the trail is relatively flat as it travels along the coast and mountainside. The trail is narrow and has a few steep drop-offs, so I recommend hiking shoes with good traction!

You may notice that on sites like AllTrails, the elevation gain looks to be over 3,000 feet (914 m). That is incorrect because the trail gains about 820 feet (260 m) total. As I mentioned, most of the trail is relatively flat, which is nice!

No, as of June 2026, you do not need a permit to hike Vereda do Larano.

Most of the PR trails require a permit, but the Vereda do Larano hike does not currently require one. I recommend checking their website before your trip to double-check if anything has changed.

That being said, the trail becomes quite busy by mid-morning and into the afternoon. I recommend arriving early to secure a parking spot and enjoy the trail with fewer crowds.

How to Get to the Vereda do Larano Trailhead

There are a few ways to get to the Vereda do Larano trailhead. We drove ourselves because we thought it was the easiest way to get there, but you can take a taxi or go with a hiking guide.

By Driving

If you have a rental car, you can easily drive yourself to the trailhead. The trailhead does not have a parking lot, and you have to park along the side of the road. There is also a clearly marked sign telling you where you cannot park.

I recommend arriving at the trailhead early because parking is limited and it fills up quickly. Later in the day, you will see cars parked on one side of the narrow road.

We arrived around 10:00 am, and we wished we had left earlier. Luckily, we found a parking spot, but it was filling up quickly.

By Taxi

You can, of course, take a taxi to and from the trailhead. I recommend reserving your taxi in advance, especially if you plan to go early in the morning.

You can also use Bolt, which is similar to Uber. A few people recommended using Bolt because it was easy to use and tends to be cheaper than a traditional taxi.

By Tour

If you do not want to deal with planning and would rather hike with a guide, you have plenty of tour companies to choose from! When you go with a hiking guide, they should provide transportation to and from the trailhead, making it easier for you. It is also a great option if you do not feel comfortable hiking Vereda do Larano by yourself.

Like most of Madeira, this area has unpredictable weather. I recommend packing a warm layer just in case!

Also, you need to wear sunscreen on this hike since the trail has a few exposed sections. Trust me, you should apply sunscreen before heading out!

This is a great baseline for what to pack, and you can adjust as needed:

Hiking Vereda do Larano to Boca do Risco: Step-By-Step Guide

I created this step-by-step guide to help you plan the best hike! Vereda do Larano was one of my favorite hikes, so I know you will fall in love with it quickly.

Always remember to leave no trace. It is crucial to pack out what you pack in and leave no trash behind. Some trailheads have trash bins, so you can easily throw your trash away. If they do not, take your trash with you and throw it away once you reach a trash bin.

Vereda do Larano Trailhead to Teleferico do Larano

The Vereda do Larano trailhead begins near the end of Caminho do Cabo de Larano. Since the trailhead does not have a parking lot, you need to park along the road. This area fills up quickly, so I recommend arriving early in the morning.

The trail then follows along the paved road past a few farms. Make sure to turn around and enjoy the views behind you because the views of the surrounding mountains and towns are stunning!

After about 0.5 miles, you will reach Teleferico do Larano. It is an old cable car that leads down to the bottom of the cliff. It appeared to be out of commission when we visited, but you can enjoy the beautiful views from the trail!

Teleferico do Larano to the Cliff Walk

Soon after the Teleferico do Larano, the trail turns to dirt as it starts to wander into the trees. This section of the trail was beautiful! It was so lush and green, and I loved it.

The next 1.3 miles travel along the mountainside through the lush forest. A few areas have some small waterfalls that were beautiful despite their size. The trail was quite wet on this section when we hiked it, and we were glad to have our hiking shoes with good traction.

Although most of this section travels through the forest, it has many viewpoints along the way. I recommend stopping at each one. Trust me, the views are worth it!

This section of the trail is also incredibly narrow with some drop-offs on one side. It makes it hard to pass other hikers, but we were able to manage!

And soon enough, the trail brings you to a stunning viewpoint looking towards the rest of the trail. This section was one of my favorites because it is out of the forest, offering incredible views.

The Cliff Walk to Boca do Risco

I call this portion of the hike the Cliff Walk because it is what the name suggests! The next section on Vereda do Larano follows along the mountainside on a narrow path.

It is definitely not for the faint of heart because it has a steep drop-off on one side. Most of this section has a railing along one side, which made me feel better.

And the views help distract you! Since this portion is exposed, you have incredible views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. The views are spectacular!

Over the next two miles, the trail continues to wander along the mountainside before heading back into the trees on the last section. And before you know it, you will arrive at Boca do Risco! You can either enjoy the views from here or hike a steep trail to a higher viewpoint.

We honestly skipped the higher viewpoint because it was crowded.  I personally think the best viewpoints are along the trail rather than at this viewpoint, so we did not mind skipping the higher viewpoint.

Boca do Risco to the Vereda do Larano Trailhead

Once you are done enjoying the views from Boca do Risco, you can begin the hike back towards the trailhead.

I honestly loved that this was an out-and-back hike because we could enjoy the views from a different perspective. And since the trail is relatively flat, the hike back flew by.

When we arrived at the trailhead, there were many cars parked along the road. Although we began the hike later than we would have liked, we were thankful we started when we did! The trail becomes incredibly busy mid-morning and in the afternoon.
